Real Eggs

Not all eggs are created equal. You probably knew that. But just how different can they be? Drastically different……

Real eggs have at least 4x the nutrients of a conventional egg. But why? The answer is actually quite simple.

Real eggs are produced from hens raised using bio-mimickry. That just means the production system mimicks natural systems. Hens raised in such a system will enjoy:

1. Clean Air-this ensures the health of the hens as well as the safety of the eggs (the fecal dust from conventional systems can easily penetrate the porous eggs).

2. Nutrient Rich Diet- A diverse diet of forage, bugs, seeds and GMO- free grains. This is the diet the chicken was designed for (conventional chickens only get chemical soaked Genetically modified corn and soybeans). This diet is not only incredibly healthy for them, but is transferred to their eggs for your family to enjoy.

3. Movement – In nature, birds always followed large herds of grazing ruminants (cattle, bison, antelope, sheep) they would sanitize and fertilize the land after grazing by scratching through the manure and eating bugs. This following movement also ensured the health of the birds because they never spent too much time in the same area (the problem with so called “free range eggs” is that the chickens range from a permanent building that quickly becomes fouled and many of the hens never learn to leave).

Our System: On our farm we utilize all three principles of chicken bio-mimickry. Our range pastured hens get to breathe fresh, clean air and enjoy plenty of sunlight daily Their diet consists of a super nutrient rich intake of forage, bugs, seeds and GMO- Free grains. We move the hens routinely in their egg mobile to graze in the fields after the cows: sanitizing, debugging, and fertilizing the fields along the way- a job they simply love to do.

The Result: When the hens are healthy and eat an extremely nutrient rich diet  they pass those nutrients into their eggs. A nutrient density test done on Joel Salatin’s Polyface Farm (a farm with the same management style that we practice) highlighted just how nutrient dense real eggs are. They had:

21X MORE OMEGA-3

7X MORE VITAMIN E

1.5X MORE VITAMIN A

7.5X MORE BETA CAROTENE

217X MORE FOLATE

30% LESS CHOLESTEROL

25X LESS SATURATED FAT

Compared to the USDA standard egg.

{Watch} Onto Fresh Pasture

As part of our regenerative grazing plan we are continually moving the cows, sheep, chickens...... onto fresh pasture. Some people imagine this would be quite the roundup to be constantly moving all of those animals. While it does take time, the animals also learn very very quickly that when we call it means fresh pasture is just ahead and they sure get excited about that. Often just a few calls and the cattle or sheep will just follow us into the fresh sward of pasture.  One of my favorite parts of moving the cattle is just how excited they get. They are massive creatures and yet they jump and throw their heads around in excitement just like their young calves haha.

Sounds Of The Farm - The Laying Hens

One thing I love to do on the farm on sunny afternoons (when the chores are done and there is time to reflect a little) is to just go out and sit in the field with the animals. Listening to their unique sounds and quirky ways combined with the fresh air, gentle breeze and soft sunshine is some excellent relaxation at the end of a long day. I had the opportunity to do this with the hens the other day and I thought I would record it and share it with you. I think I will do a bit of a series on the different "sounds of the farm" and beginning with the hens. "Cluck, cluck" doesn't quite do justice to the sounds they make out on pasture. What do you think?
